I originally developed this piece for a Mama's Day card project. The original character was based on a photograph taken at one of my butterfly workshops in Santa Ana, CA where a boy was happily focused on painting his butterfly. I wanted to show a migrant mother alongside her son. Yet, she can also be a school teacher working with her pupil, or an older sister with her sibling.
A year before I saw the film Elysium, I had thought about a poster that I wanted to name Citizens of the World. I wanted to show that we ultimately are all people on mother earth, and thus we are her citizens. The title is a celebration of transnationalism and the rejection of borders, as well as a call out for us to take responsibility for the well being of our mother, the planet, la pachamama.
