This is a piece I created in 2005 for International Women's Day.

In this self-portrait, the woman on the left represents my colonized self, while the woman on the right represents is my raw, liberated self. The colonized self is wearing a white shirt, symbolizing the dominant narratives of whiteness that face women of color. The colonized self is also wearing earrings and lipstick, while the raw self wears nothing - she is simply in her own skin.

Both figures have a tattoo on their arm. The broken heart on the left epitomizes the effects of patriarchy, the way in which it can affect our own sense of self worth and our relationship to our bodies. The whole heart on the right represents the wholeness and raw emotion we carry within ourselves, just as we are. It represents the collective human dignity of women.
