Like so many Latina girls, Selena was the first public figure who reflected my bicultural identity and showed me that our stories belonged in the spotlight. I was in high school when she was killed, and her loss was deeply felt by so many of us. I created this print in her honor as part of a collective portfolio at the Mission Cultural Center under the mentorship of legendary Chicano printmaker Juan R. Fuentes. As one of my earliest screen prints, I kept the design bold and simple to celebrate Selena's enduring power, beauty, and legacy.
