We Keep Each Other Safe. When our political systems break down, when basic government functions are under attack, when billionaires gut healthcare and our public lands, when our bodies become battlegrounds—mutual aid and care are the pathways forward.
The times we are in require community protection and collective care. They require us to be courageous and participatory, and to keep each other safe.
We can learn a lot from Orcas (killer whales), as they are highly intelligent and social animals that protect each other in several ways:
-
Traveling in Pods – They live in tight-knit family groups (pods) led by matriarchs
-
Defending Against Threats – If a pod member is in danger, orcas work together to fend off predators like sharks or to rescue an injured or trapped companion.
-
Cooperative Hunting – They use teamwork and sophisticated hunting strategies to ensure food for the entire pod, helping weaker members survive.
-
Caring for the Young and Injured – Older orcas help raise calves, and if a member is sick or injured, others will slow down and stay close to support them.
-
Communication & Coordination – Using echolocation and vocalizations, orcas alert each other to danger and coordinate actions to stay safe.
Be like the Orcas and show up for your community.
